MAORI PERSPECTIVES OF GIFTEDNESS & TALENT IN AOTEAROA/NZ Whakaahurutia te iho wairua o te tamaiti : Nurture the Essence of the Child

This presentation brings together New Zealand research from a range of sources highlighting what gifted Maori students and their families value. Two advisers share their experiences of working with gifted Maori learners and their whanau from across both Kura Kaupapa Maori and mainstream settings. Broader perspectives of giftedness will be explored and student perspectives will be woven throughout the presentation. The paper asks that teachers reflect on

what they are currently doing that is working well for gifted Maori students? what they can add to, or do differently to ensure that gifted Maori students thrive in our schools?
