CONFERENCE ABSTRACTSPresenter: Sara Meadows“PEGS”: Programme Enhancement for Gifted Students
Although often insufficient on its own, quality in-class provision is essential to meeting the needs of gifted students. Most gifted students spend the majority of their school time in regular classes. All teachers, therefore, have a professional responsibility to provide for these students, on a daily basis. This workshop aims to provide classroom teachers with twelve key strategies to improve the educational and emotional outcomes for their gifted students. Grouped under the headings of People, Engagement, Guidance and Success, these strategies can simply be “pegged” to current planning and teaching practices. They require a minimum of extra time and energy on the teacher’s part, but make a huge difference to the gifted student’s experience in the classroom. Some of the strategies may lead to teachers viewing their role as teachers of the gifted in a new light. A number of “PEGS” strategies will be used as part of the workshop, thereby giving teachers first-hand experience of being a learner in a “PEGS”-friendly classroom. Participants will use games, discussion and creative problem-solving techniques to explore the potential of some of the “PEGS” techniques.
