CONFERENCE PROCEEDINGS
The Reaching Forward national conference on gifted education was held in Rotorua, New Zealand, at Distinction Rotorua Hotel & Conference Centre from 13th to 15th March 2009, and was attended by delegates from throughout New Zealand and from Australia.
The theme of the conference was achieving sustainability in gifted education. This is a dimension of education which everywhere in the world has a history of fluctuating support. Yet if gifted children are truly to have their needs met, we must find a way of weaving gifted education permanently into the very fabric of our education system.Speakers covered many aspects of the topic, from research into placement and grouping through to practical ideas for workable classroom programmes, as well as other relevant topics. The proceedings below contain a full list of all speakers, their abstracts, and where available, access to a PDF, Powerpoint or written paper from their presentation.
A special feature of the conference was the input of gifted Maori students from local schools at every stage of the proceedings. The conference itself was formally opened by Whatanui Flavell, a senior boy from Te Kura Kaupapa Maori o Te Koutu. Maori students provided the essential powhiri (opening ceremony), they opened the keynote sessions and a number of papers and workshops by describing their own passions and achievements (including in one case a brief dance performance), they provided the musical highlight of the conference dinner entertainment, and one of their number provided the art for the conference handbook. Collectively and individually, they demonstrated the reality of giftedness in Maori children which cultural differences can cause us to overlook.
The conference was organised by REACH Education, a non-government agency which focusses specifically on the provision of high calibre professional development in gifted education.
